In July 1990, a dispute over a golf course on Kanien'kéhaka lands in Oka, Quebec, sparked a historic armed standoff between Mohawk protestors, Québec police, and the Canadian army. Alanis Obomsawin spent 78 days filming behind the Kanien'kéhaka lines, capturing the tension and resilience of the community. Released in 1993, Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance became a landmark documentary, winning numerous international awards and the first Best Canadian Feature at TIFF, hailed as a watershed moment in First Nations cinema.
